Wordpress hacked, site penalised

Since few days ago, my site starts losing traffic like -50% each day and now ended up like 10% of usual traffic. I knew something was wrong and I went to theme and found a super huge block of spammy codes and invisible links placed into footer template. Seriously, I have no idea since when this was done by who. Just wanna warm you all who run wordpress that, dont make 777 to your wordpress theme, or else you might get hacked and penalised without your knowledge.

I think it would takes months for my site to gain back the trust from google. Being at #1 on serps for most keywords, now all rankings gone,!!!!

Yea usually chmod 666 on all theme files works for me on my setup.. Except the images upload folder which keep at 755 or 777.

Or just request Google to Remove penalty and tell them what happened. If you are lucky, they will restore your site.

Use google webmaster tools and file a reconsideration request explaining in detail what happened. They will look at your site and remove any penalty if everything looks ok.

Yea, but you also have to make sure you haven't done anything against their guidelines at all because they will give you a thorough examination.

If I were you, I would keep the code and make a pledge to Google. With code intact, they might more easily pinpoint the offender, or, in the worst case, the culprit is not you.

Usually Google if persuaded that it wasnt your fault will remove you from their chopping board

same thing happened to one of my blogs.

the files were 644 and still got hacked.

not just the footer, the hacker even edited many posts and placed hidden links in them.

now I have to correct each and every post that he edited....

Check the source code of your pages on the server for <iframe tags and other invisible links (search for: "http://") that you didn't put on the page.

If you use WordPress, always keep the version up to date.

There are other reasons you can fall in the SERPs besides hacking. If you got hacked and had malicious code put on the page (viruses, etc.), you'll probably get the "This site may harm your computer" warning in Google SERPs, and also a warning at Yahoo. If you don't see that warning for your site, then maybe they haven't noticed yet, or maybe it was just links but not virus code that was put on your pages, or the site might have lost standing for some other reason like duplicate content or copyright issues. You can get a duplicate content penalty even if it's someone else that has copied your content.

See my previous post for a few of the possible reasons.

If those don't seem to apply, read carefully each point in Google's Website Quality Guidelines and compare your own practices to the things they warn that they will downgrade a site for. Do any of those things apply? Do the things they say to do. Don't do the things they say not to do.
