wordpress.com is already hosted (free) and you have less features.

wordpress.org is self-hosted, that means you install wordpress on your own server (by your hosting company) and you have no limitations.

if you planned to have a professional blog, you should use wordpress.org. wordpress.org provide wordpress application for you to download. You can fully customize your wordpress blog using your own domain + host.

If you want to make money with your blog don't use wordpress.com. I know, you don't need to buy your own domainname and hosting (which would be the plus), but as far as I know (if it hasn't changed in the last few months), you can't put ads on these blogs. So that means you wouldn't be able to make money.

wordpress.org is official site from where u can download, plugins, theme and wordpress CMS.

    wordpress.com - free blog for example, www.birthdaysms.wordpress.com

Better way to use wp is to get ur own hosting and install wordpress there so u can use use adsense or adbrite.

Thanks for all the advice - I actually have my own domain that I want to use so I guess .org is the better way to go?

Yes. self hosting with wordpress.org is best. Go ahead. If you want to set up and install wordpress, i can do it for free. Because it takes little time only.

.org is the way to go. With the .org-version you get to install plugins and perform out-of-the-box SEO. You also can display ads if you want to, and you can use really nice themes.

On the .com-version, you can only blog. In order to change a few lines in the code - you need to buy the access to it. That ain't good. Use the self-hosted wordpress instead - with your own domain.

It's possible to use WordPress.com hosting with your own domain through "domain mapping" but that involves recurring fee.

If you feel comfortable maintaining your own site and keeping your WordPress installation up-to-date, I'd definitely go for the self-hosted (.org) version as like others have mentioned previously, you get a lot more control over customization and whatnot.

Wordpress.org if you intend to use your blog for commercial purposes but you will have to pay to host it.

I would strongly recommend you to install the WordPress, that is the CMS, which you can download from www.wordpress.org Nothing beats having a self-installed blog.

Actually,Wordpress is obtainable in two forms. Wordpress.com is an Open Source software which means it's free for you to use and modify to meet your personal needs. (in this case, to create blogs).Since it's free, it does have limitations. On the other hand, Wordpress.org provides the software to make your blog, but Wordpress.org does not host your blog on the Internet for you.
