    Hello all,

I'm confused. It's not hard.

I set up a blog on wordpress.com, but I want a custom theme so do I need to install wordpress.org and transfer my blog? What happens then, do I need to host it myself? Do I need to buy a new domain to do that?

    Help!

    Thanks

As far as I am aware, .org is for the distribution/support of the WordPress software package and not for hosting blogs. The .com is the free blog hosting domain.

If you wish to have greater control over your WordPress installation then you are correct to assume that hosting it yourself is the way to go.

If you move to .com you will have to arrange hosting and buy a domain name, only then will you have the power to fully customize.

    1. Buy new domain
    2. Buy new host
    3. Export your .com to your .org.

    Not very difficult.

Remember to purchase hosting, and choose wisely...
(Cheap doesn't always mean good, check bandwith, addon domain, whois privacy etc)

Hang on though - is it better SEO-wise to have a external blog on .com, or an internal blog hosted on my own site, under a subdomain?
    Thanks

I started out with the free version but then switched after I realized what could be done with wordpress.org. If you switch buy a domain get hosting and install the lasest version of WP. Then search through hundreds of themes and plugins. Have Fun.

Buy a domain name and space . Install Wordpress in your hosting account(available at wordpress.org) .If you don't know to configure wordpress , you may use the auto installer feature found with some hosting providers(For eg:Dreamhost ) . After installation , you can transfer your posts form old wordpress.com blog by import feature your blog dashboard . Wordpress.org allows you to edit and customize your theme .
