Wordpress Changeover

    Hello,

I had to change my website DNS. I had a wordpress blog installed on my site.

I saved the wordpress files via FTP, without realizing that you should export the files.

Now I've installed a new wordpress, I can get the theme back, but I have no idea how I get my posts and comments back. Have I lost them forever? Or can I still retrieve them via the FTP files that I saved.

I tried searching for this stuff online but cannot find any info pertaining to this problem anywhere.

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you

WordPress stores its content and settings in a database, which is not part of the site files.

You should either have made a database (MySQL) backup via cPanel (Backups > Partial Backups > Download a MySQL Database Backup), or with phpMyAdmin. And then imported that file the same way.

Or, you could have exported your posts etc. in the WordPress backend (Settings > Tools > Export) as a XML file, and imported same on your new site.

Your only option now is to see if you can salvage some content via the Google/Bing cache, and/or Wayback Machine (archive.org) - you'll have to copy and paste, and be quick (before the cache updates).

Good luck and Happy Holidays! :)

P.S. Go to http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/ and find a backup plugin, so you'll always have independent backups of your data.

The same thing happened to me back at the end of November. You can do as kokopelli says and search for the caches of your pages - just make sure the URLs are identical otherwise you risk a duplicate content crisis. It took me three days to get over 100 pages back online and although I lost all my comments, I do think my blog needed a huge remodel so I've seen it as a positive, even if it felt like everything was lost at the time.
