wordpress caching system not working?

I figured I'd give the blog thing another go. I'd heard from a lot of people that wordpress used to be very, very bad when it comes to scalability. apparently now caching is a function included by default.

I don't seem to see any of the cached files, though. according to the documentation there should be a cache folder in /wp-content/. I don't see anything at all.

do only certain events trigger things getting cached?

(I added some entries and browsed around, figured that'd be enough for it to start caching things)

    this is on 2.0.4
