Hands down the best way to go is buying your own domain, hosting, and install wordpress.

The problem with using blogger.com or wordpress.com is the most important problem. "You do NOT own the blog"

One more vote for WP, if you're host offers cPanel you can install it on the server with just one click. I always prefer to host it myself.

If you are ready to spend some money then I suggest you to buy your own domain and web hosting. You can also go for wordpress blog. It is the best CMS till now.

for starters like me, i use blogger, as it is more user friendly. and all you need is basic knowledge of html, and you are good to go. but if you are an advanced user. it's better to use wordpress that is hosted.

I am new to this whole blogging thing. I have tried Blogger, Blogspot and Wordpress. I prefer Wordpress. So far, I have been required to pay for any of the plug-ins I've used.

I really recommend you use wordpress with hosted under your own domain instead of using free blog such as xxx.blogspot.com or xxx.wordpress.com. You will find that using free blog is much easier but much less flexibility in control your blog either. If your contents on free blog gone for whatever reason then you cannot complain anything because it's "FREE" :)

Wordpress self hosted is by far the best option, because you have total control - but I couldn't have done it myself if I hadn't had CPanel. The installation made my head fizz, but then I realised I had Fantastico which does it all for you. If you're a little boggy surrounding details for self-hosting, Fantastico/CPanel is an absolute must.

I also found that when I moved from wordpress.com to blogspot.com, I really knackered out in terms of tags and search times - I'm not sure why, but I never got anything like the same search engine traffic with Blogspot as I did on Wordpress. I did this stupid switch from wordpress.com, then to blogspot.com so I could use Adsense, then finally self hosting. Tip: don't do it like that. Only stupid people do it like that. ;)

WP self hosting + CPanel/Fantastico is your best bet, with a pay monthly hosting package that you can add to if/when the site grows :)

I would suggest you to use self-hosted wordpress. Lot of advantages over blogspot. Be it theme, plugins, seo optimization, flexibility (you can have your own forum if you know how to integrate it with wordpress) and etc. If seo and traffic is an issue, there are a many seo-optimized theme for wordpress out there. Try to google it.

Use wordpress and use it over your custom purchased domain and webhosting.
You will get very flexible admincp and easy to use.

Since wordpress is SO popular, and the code is open, are there any security considerations?

Anything I need to know to avoid a hack?
