I don't know why, but Google likes Wordpress blogs, even if they are not optimized. However using some SEO plugins and a good theme can help you to get better positions
all i can say is just write more quality and unique content blogs. write frequently articles and submit it into top social bookmarking websites.
write unique content, do sbm of it, promote in articles or press releases and other link building activities.. that all you need to do for promote your blog. both wordpress and blogspot are similer in the way of promotion.
