Wordpress 404 error

Anybody run into this problem and know how to fix it?

Both pages and posts return a 404 error message on the homepage. I've tried setting a static page and just leaving the posts as the first page, but it still returns the 404 error message. When I try the homepage it just defaults to the 404 error even though there's pages and posts.

I spent the better part of the day configuring Wordpress and the plugins and had the pages set and now this. I hate to have to uninstall it and start again. Is there a file I can replace to get it back to normal?

    Thanks

No, what I did was I had created the static homepage earlier and I forgot and created another page with the same name and same permalink structure. And being lazy since I had already put all the information on the second page (title, description, keywords, content, etc.) I deleted the first and started getting the 404 error.

Anyway I decided to just delete it and start over again, but it irks me to work for several hours, hit the publish button get a 404 error and have to start all over from scatch again :(

As it was since there wasn't an immediate solution it was faster to just rebuild it. Once I stopped griping and cursing that is.

    Thanks

If you can't fix it, your best bet would be to go on the admin panel click on 'tools' then click on export and download an XML file. Then install a fresh version of Wordpress (this time don't be lazy) and import your posts, categories, tags and comments. ;)
