On the category part on my wordpress blog I have one category. I have lots of pages though. Check the football link in my signature and you will see what I mean. Have as many as you want as it is your site;)

now I was more so thinking of the serps getting those categories slammed up so google woild reference me to my title key word search like pharmaceutical grade fish oil," my web site fishoilsales.com comes up #1 in the serps for the term pharmaceutical grade fish oil - at MSN and Yahoo,"" and my press release co mes up #6 on the home page og Google for the same," so maybe I could use a lesser pr blog to add more targeted key words categories too," like pharmaceutical grade fish oil," and then some. am I on to a good search here???

Yes you could do that I guess. But as long as you keep targeting the keywords you want to rank well in then you will get a good rank.
As for your categories add as many as you can like above post states.

glendowney I noticed you have many pages," I started of this way however I got no reviews their," so Categories are more to the point plus it opens up the comment box at the end of the post," I don't see that happening with the pages,"
    correct me if im wrong,"

It really won't do anything. Only use new categories when they're needed. If you have hundreds, then Google and other bots will just think you're link spamming.

I have many pages as I want the blog to be more like a website. To be honest I am not really bothered about people commenting on my articles. The reason I have so many pages is well like I said, to make it more like a website. Everyone is different in what they do. I think it looks a bit neater this way and I have been told is easy to navigate around, so I left it that way.

Personally, I think you should have as many categories as your topic requires. If you speak alot about niches within your topic, then I think a category for each niche is proper as it makes it easier for your users to find what they need.

One thing that I do, though, is when I start, I do not make many categories because I do not want the site or blog to look empty. Once I get about 4 or 5 articles written in a topic, then I open the new category.

    I somewhat agree with you,"

but in reference to what shamess said above It really won't do anything. Only use new categories when they're needed. If you have hundreds, then Google and other bots will just think you're link spamming.

it-is more of a I do and do not do tactic," it is more of a knowledge based inclusion," the fact is you dont want to be known as a spammer and maybe by over loading your categories with many" your blog could get noted as SPAM"

Interesting thread. I just created a wedding site with Wordpress and have I think 8 categories on it. It's monetized so each category is a fairly well-searched-for-term, ie. wedding cakes, wedding planners, etc.
I also created another site with Wordpress which is also monetized and it only has 2 categories, creative photography and creative writing. This was because I couldn't think of any more categories, or rather I couldn't think of any more categories that I could monetize.
So monetizing might be one reason for deciding how many categories to have.

Tags are more appreciated than categories. You can submit different posts under several tags, it will help you better than if you submit under categories.

    Try it. ;)
