Don't you all wish we could make money each time we clicked on word count?

I know in a day's time, I probably click it at least 20 times.

I recently discovered that there's a Word Count toolbar. When you go to tools-->word count, there's a button that says, "Show Toolbar". As long as you don't click the X on the toolbar it should be there everytime you open Word. Then you only have to click on Recount. That toolbar is a lifesaver!

    Buy a Mac. :)

Word for mac shows you the word/char count in real time. I don't click on anything. I just write. :D

Ha. I'll just build a program to rival your mac counterpart!

Just kidding. Coding something like MS Word could take literally forever with one person. It is weird that they did not include real time counting...it isn't hard to implement...especially considering they have many other more complex featuers...

It can't be that hard. My Word does it.

Maybe the new version of Word for Windows does it.

Makes no sense to me. :D

    Tools > Word Count

I've never seen a version of MS Word that didn't have it.

You know something must be really screwy here and it could be me - lol

But I don't get this - I never knew about the word count tool until just now reading this post - doh.

So I went to word and there it is but the thing that gets me is this:

I do a regular article everyday for a client - always 450 words or 900 words.

I just opened about 20 articles to check and all the ones I say are 450 words, the word count checker says over 1000.

All the ones that I say 900 words are anywhere from 1800 -2700. Is this thing legit - does it really work bc something is odd here........

Maybe you're writing more words than you have to

Or is it possible that you're looking at characters instead of words? Words counts both.

You should have a word/char count. On windows machines, you have to go find it in a menu and bring it out. (I haven't tried the latest version so maybe it has changed)

On Macs, the count is just there always.

400 words is about a page long with normal font and spacing in Word. That should give you an indication as to whether man or machine can outcount the other ;)

Wow this is interesting. I have always just went by the word count to price my articles. I've never had anyone complain. (Knock on wood):)

You may want to try Atlantis Wordprocessor. It seems like a MS Word clone designed for writers. It keeps a running tab word count in the bottom tray of the software.

You always know at a glance your word count. It's really handy.

    regards,

    Don

does the MS Word Count feature of Word count things like 'I, and, it, etc...'?...and for that matter...do all you writers count those as words?

Word 2007 has the word count feature always visible, and counting live down the bottom of the screen.

For earlier versions, the easiest way I found was to create a button for the word count and dock it in one of the existing toolbars (go to Tools > Customise, then click the Commands tab. Choose the tools category, and then scroll down on the right hand side until you find the Word Count option. Then simply drag that into place on one of your existing Word toolbars). That way you get just the Word Count button, not the full toolbar.

    Phlegm...
