Woman Gets Fined 1.9 Mill for Illegal Downloading

A federal jury Thursday found a 32-year-old Minnesota woman guilty of illegally downloading music from the Internet and fined her $80,000 each — a total of $1.9 million — for 24 songs.

Jammie Thomas-Rasset’s case was the first such copyright infringement case to go to trial in the United States, her attorney said.

Looks like whoever fined her runned out of money

Serisouly I dont understand why they catch those who download instead of those who provide! are they too weak to catch the big downloads sites? thats why they go to the innocent ones to get their money from?

EDIT: OMG for 24 songs only??? thats crazy!!!! they really think she will get that money? haha people are so funny today, unreasonable, with no sense.

I definitely go with Ichigo91 on the point. I am feeling sad for the lady. Don't know whether she will be able to pay such a huge fine for mere 24 songs or not. :(

What I dont get is, why dont they just charge her the cost of the actual track? Unless she has been providing and sharing the track, then that makes a difference, but if shes illegally downloaded a few and not shared them. She obviously was not going to buy them anyhow, so they wouldnt have got money off her either way because people who download wont buy, so let them download because if you stop them they still wont buy.

You can download the songs from YouTube, using certain programs. I don't get what's the difference? Why aren't people charged for downloading directly from such a huge provider?

The jury members are out of their mind. They should catch the providers and in any case that is too big amount for 24 songs.
