I noticed on Google today that doing a search for my specific keywords my site is the only one without www in the listings. Also, when I do a link check using Yahoo or a link checker, I get different results with and without the www in the url. I know there is a change I can make with my hosting company and also in Google Webmaster Tools, but which is better,,,,with or without the www?
But why do I get 2 different results? I know that there are probab;y text backlinks out there with and some without the www, Why is my site the only one with www on a Google search?
Link checking with and without www gives 2 different sets of results as, when you search without the www it is assumed by the search engines that you are looking for backlinks to the site as well as to the subdomains of the site.
Since it's very hard to control the people linking to your website, you might try something more universal: 1. Choose between www or non-www version 2. Make 301 redirect in your .htaccess file to the preferred version 3. Set the preferred domain in google's webmastertools This way you won't loose any PR, backlinks or related SERPS
I'm trying to figure this one out also. Using Yahoo Sute Explorer, doing a search: w/o www, 202 pages - 186 links. with www, 113 paghes - 769 links. Have I got it wrong or should the higher page count be with the higher link count? I have the 301 redirect set already which also throws me off when I look at these numbers. I was in the process of changing the "Home" links onall of my pages to "pedal car home" to get a keyword in when this came up...make the link with or without the www.
