I'm trying to connect to my wireless router with my new pcmcia wireless card for my laptop. It shows the laptop has a "good" connection to the network, but when I open IE, it says i'm not connected... When I physically plug into the network, things work fine, but trying to do it wirelessly I continue to get problems.... Do I need to enter a WEP kep? If so, how come it works when it's not wireless? To find the wep you type your ip into the browser and log in... but I haven't set up that login info yet. Thanks for any help guys, I'm new to the whole wireless network thing.
I've had that problem before. I believe what is happening is that the wireless router is not giving your laptop an IP address, which is needed to connecto to the internet. There could be a number of reasons that your router is not giving IP addresses. Here are two things that have worked for me. The quick way that sometimes works Go to start --> Run. Type cmd. At the command prompt type "ipconfig /renew" and press enter. Note the space before the "/". The long way that always works Unplug power from your modem and wireless router entirely. Remove the internet connection as well as the power. Leave it unplugged for 20 minutes then plug everything back in. I've read that some people have to leave theirs unplugged 24 hours to get their wireless to work, so if 20 minutes doesn't work for you, try a longer period of time. Of course, your problem could be something entirely different from mine and in that case, I don't have a clue.
i fixed the problem by restarting after entering the wep key in the wireless settings. The "good" connection it was showing before I did the restart was lying
