I am considering dumping my cable connection with Comcast. I am not guaranteed a static IP when I log on but for months at a time the IP has not changed. I don't know how important this is to setting up a router. I believe my current router auto detects this stuff. I am considering purchasing Sprints EVO service for my notebook. I understand there are a couple of routers that you can use with the cards. They offer unlimited for a bit above $60 a month (taxes and fees extra) which is about what I pay for cable. I'd like to dump comcast all together and just run the pc card in a router and hook my desktop machines up to the router. This way I could have net access anywhere in the city plus my home on all my computers. I understand it might be a little slower but then again comcast isn't exactly blazing fast for me. I don't game or download music I just surf and publish sites. This is an important question for me: Does Sprint assign a static IP to the Aircards (I'm thinking the Sierra 595) with the Kyocera KR1 http://www.kyocera-wireless.com/kr1-router/ Has anybody tried this?
Usually you have to pay extra for any static Ip address. Not sure what sprint does. The router seems like it would be fine for what you have in mind.
I wouldn't do it. EVDO is great for mobile applications but I wouldn't dump cable/adsl for it. "unlimited" EVDO is not unlimited. Last I read "unlimited" was actually about 1GB of transfer/month. They do offer static IPs, but not via the normal channels. I have done some work for a bank that was converting from ISDN backup links to EVDO and were able to get static IPs.
