In reality, the don't need to backup as such - they have multiple datacenters that hold copies of the data. If they wanted to they could have stopped the bad data propagating - assuming they knew about it and assuming that that's what has happened.

I've been watching events unfold over the past week or so on several forums and across several threads (my long term home is on highrankings) and the only times I feel I'm making any sense of what is happening, is when I read your 'pre-score theory' posts!

    Keep it up.

BTW. Mr Cutts has been writing up his blog again, this time on the update: (Peon - I can't post link. prefix with www) mattcutts.com/blog/more-info-on-updates

That suggests to me that this was an update. But why not come straight out and say it ??
Why all the pussy footing around - hmmm, perhaps 'cos its a mess
or perhaps matt doesn't actually know whether it was a major update or not
or perhaps Caryl is right and nobody wants to admit it :D

I believe you're right because it doesn't make any sense! I just hope this mess clears soon!

And yes, Google has some problems too... I will be monitoring Googlebot's activies closer to see if I can find any relevant info.

    I really hope you're right
