In reality, the don't need to backup as such - they have multiple datacenters that hold copies of the data. If they wanted to they could have stopped the bad data propagating - assuming they knew about it and assuming that that's what has happened.

That suggests to me that this was an update. But why not come straight out and say it ?? Why all the pussy footing around - hmmm, perhaps 'cos its a mess or perhaps matt doesn't actually know whether it was a major update or not or perhaps Caryl is right and nobody wants to admit it
I believe you're right because it doesn't make any sense! I just hope this mess clears soon! And yes, Google has some problems too... I will be monitoring Googlebot's activies closer to see if I can find any relevant info. I really hope you're right
my site was dropped after each update during the last 2 years. But it always comes back after 2-3 weeks without any efforts from my side. I hope this time will be also
