purchased a new laptop for my wife which came with Vista... what a piece of crap... If I would have known how difficult Vista makes doing simple everyday activities I would never have purchased a computer that did not come with XP. I still haven't been able to access files on her computer over my network

Used both XP and Vista and think XP is far better.
Problem is most PC's and Laptops are starting to come with Vista installed, so unless you have a XP disk or buy one your pretty much stuck with Vista

New computers ship with Vista OS. If you are using Xp currently there are no compelling reasons to go for Vista except maybe dx10. There are no show stopping bugs in Vista and it is a pretty stable OS

    Vista is horrible, enough said.
The ONLY thing good about it is, the design and features, that is ALL.

The negatives you ask? Resource hog, Driver issues, boot up times, etc.

I got vista with a laptop not to long ago, I tried for a VERY long time to install my $600 printer, and what do I get? A slap in the face.

I recommend anyone and everyone, DOWNGRADE to XP.

    Vista is horrible!

I got Vista Home Premium on my Dell laptop (2GB Memory/128MB VC) and have been using it for about 10 months now and love it. I have had no issue. The graphics are great, transparent title bars and all. I used XP prior to that and had a number of problems with system lockups.

That said I don't see any reason to upgrade to Vista unless you are buying a new computer in which case I would highly recommand it. But you do need 2GB of memory and a 128MB video card or better. If not do not have this don't even bother trying to run it.

Their are a lot of security and mobile features build into Vista that XP does not have, so if you are getting a new laptop go for Vista.

    jason30,

All new laptops come with Vista, Almost all of them, if not all will come with vista, and there is no way to get windows xp.

The security issue your talking about, only depends on what kind of software you use.

Example, If you use a horrible anti-virus and no firewall, then of course your windows xp computer won't be safe.

Yeah, sure windows vista has extra security features that are user friendly so you don't need to get extra software, but the security that vista manually has is still not as good as downloading a good anti-virus and firewall.

Also, windows xp still has updates, and will for a while, so in reality, it is not as "less secure", as people may expect.

I still use XP from time to time, but I generally use Vista now with my new computer. My programs seem to work fine (although I needed to download updates for a few).

I have tried Vista on 6 different machines, from 512MB to 2GB RAM, Laptop and Desktop, Dual Core, Single Core. At this point (one year later) I find Vista totally useless. The more I try it the more I hate it sorry...

XP Pro and Ubuntu 7.10 here.
