Windows Vista

I am a Newb to all this so i hope i am posting this Thread in the correct place. I recently purchased a new Laptop with Windows Vista ( basic )already installed. I must say that so far i am not impressed with it. Main problems are : Laptop runs slow. After installing Skype to talk to my son in Brazil it is even slower. After complaining about the Laptop to the shop where i bought it i was told that i needed to increase the Memory because Vista requires a lot to run.
I have doubled the memory, but i still cant open a window whilst on Skye. It tends to cut it off.
My question is, has anyone had the same problems wth Vista ?
Have they sorted it out and ( if so how ) ?

I think this is not the problem of Vista. You need to check your laptop processor . Vista is working nice on Intel Core 2 Due Processor.

Alot of applications are inconpatible or dont run correctly with Vista, If I was you I would just get XP on, much easier.

If your laptop is preloaded with Vista it should work fine. Make sure you
have atleast 80 Gb hard disk and 1 Gb RAM.

Install Norton utilities or equivalent good anti virus software.

Your shop should sort this out. Run skype as administrator.
Best option would be to simulate the problem at the shop.

    My 2 cents
    Regards

I had Vista on my computer I had 2gb ram and it still ran slow so I got rid of it and put good ol' XP on it. Ill wait till SP1 or SP2 for Vista again. By then just of the holes should be filled up.

Norton Utilities to increase the speed of a laptop running Skype? You should work as a sales person. NU is crap, don't go near it.

Get even more RAM, or install XP.

Better yet, if you're just using your computer to check email, Skype, write html (or whatever) and surf the interknit - install 98 Lite, or Ubuntu.

Get more ram if you can, and/or do the vista tweaks that are on the next, turn off services you don't need, indexing and such, i dont think aero is on that version... you can use that 'readyboost' thing for some extra ram if you have a USB drive handy, or nuke vista and run XP. :)

Thanks everyone. It would seem that the general opinion would be to get rid of Vista and install XP. I might just do that because i have already increased Ram up to 2Gb. without it making much difference.

Vista attracts unneccessary hating, but at the same time, its not really much different to XP.

Thanks for the idea Kerosene. I don't have any knowledge of 98 Lite, or Ubuntu but i will certainly take a look and maybe give it a try.

I jumped from Widows 2000 straight on to Vista with my new Laptop. I do like Vista, just not the speed it runs at or the fact that it doesn't seem to like Skype.
