Windows registry question

Discussion in 'General Chat' started by Bernard, Jun 1, 2004.

I was editing my Windows registry yesterday cleaning out all the settings that vermin had managed to infiltrate. I found untold amounts of entries for gambling and porn websites in

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Domains

I did not find a single entry for a domain that I recognized, so I nuked them all. Does anyone know what this registry setting is for? I'm guessing it is related to Internet Explorer's trusted zones or something?

    If I may help here;
In fact these are the registry keys for the Restricted Zones sites for your browser that handle the way the security settings kick in to limit the functions of the browser when visiting a bad website.

Most lists are fairly outdated unless renewed regularly
so could I suggest downloading the most precise set of RZ sites available:

    IESPYAD
    from http://www.staff.uiuc.edu/~ehowes/resource.htm

Simply extract the contents of the zip file, and double click the install.bat file.
IESPYAD will place around 6,000 sites into the Restricted Zones list of your browser, and keep the net that much safer to negotiate.

The trusted zones are in a similar key HKCU\ ~\Internet Settings\Zones\2
and are not written up in text format.

So the registry key I referenced should list all the gambling, porn, etc. sites that push drive by downloads?

I'll check out the site you listed. Thanks.

That key will list all the sites added to your Restricted Zones, many of which are will attempt to hijack your system one way or another. These sites can be controlled by having the security settings in IE for Restricted Zones at the correct levels.

But that list is far from complete, in listing all the known bad sites that hijack, redirect, drive-by download, auto-install, use an exploit or vulnerability, infect or provide a means of infection. This batch of sites are ones we want to avoid altogether, not just restrict their activity. These sites go in your Hosts file so that your browser cannot go to that site, even if directed there.

This list of some ~26,000 sites comes from hpguru's Host file:
    http://webpages.charter.net/hpguru/hosts/hosts.html

or use the MVP's hosts file from this site:
    http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
which also has excellent hosts information and is current as of 8 Jun.

    Thanks Ice. Good reading!

It appears that Spybot Search & Destroy has already created a rather large hosts file for me.
