I prefer linux. I have Debian on my server? What do you use and why? What are the key benefits?

Probably the thing I like most about Debian is the aptitude. Whenever I need a new program or to update\upgrade my programs all I need to do is:

    apt-get install php4

And then php gets installed. There is also a way to search for programs and I can update my entire server using two commands.

Linux: Ununtu desktop for home simplicity, Debian for cPanel running... CentOS if you don't know what you are doing and need help from a others... and need your hosting company to manage your box.

Microsoft if your clients want it/you are used to it. If you need big db multi user databases access is a good way to go.

Currently running CentOS on servers, fiddling with Ubuntu at home - but also have XP media center running.

As much as I love Gentoo (and I've been using it from the start as well) I really don't recommend it for a server environment. There's been too many times where updates have broken my environment (Postfix comes to mind) where I had to immediately drop what I was doing and spend a bunch of time fixing things. I guess if you only manage a small amount of boxes and had a lot of time to devote to it, it wouldn't be so bad, but I use CentOS for pretty much everything now.

Generally I prefer Gentoo as well, and haven't run into many problems like this. I currently run it on a couple pretty large website clusters, and it's performing great for me. One site would chug along slowly when it was running a RPM-based distro (RHEL), but once I switched to Gentoo, the system runs fast with a very reduced load.
