I have linux and Vista on my system. When I'm in either operating system how do I have the other operating system open in another window?

I don't think you can do this. You'd have two OS competing for the same processor and chips. Kaboom! It'd probably result in a black hole, swallowing up all the things you know and love.

You can have the option to dual boot if you wish - you turn on your comptuer, and you select '1' for linux, or '2' for windows. But as far as I'm know, you can't boot both and just 'assign' them to a window.

just install VMWARE , it acts as Virtual Machine

install vmware for linux and install windows in vmware , then you will be able to access windows from your linux system , dont try that on a ancient machine as it is bound to make your PC slower

You can use virtualization tools to do that. You just need 1 OS and install other OS as virtual OS. So you can switch between each other any time you want. Here are the tools that I have been using :

VMWare (Paid software, but I highly recommend this one)

    VirtualBox (Open Source) ;)

Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 (Freeware)

Thanks, I'm going to give VirtualBox a shot and see what happens. I haven't had linux for more than about thirty minutes now so I'll see if I can figure it out.

Why not try WINE (wine is not an emulator) to emulate the windows environment on linux so it can run the majority of programs designed for windows?

nopes, no need for Installing Virtual-Box for both Linux and Windows
you need software for the OS which you are using to boot the PC

and a Linux Forum Will be a more appropriate place to ask such Queries :)

I've got VirualBox up and running but it's not connecting to my Vista. Do have to install a fresh copy of Vista or can I use an exsisting Vista?

    Let's make this clear:
You can NOT open your Vista inside Linux. You can NOT open you Linux inside Vista.

But you can use two different OS'es at the same time using virtualization software. How does it work:
    - You download virtualization software (you already did)
    - In this software, you can create a Virtual machine. This means you can install another OS inside this virtual environment, so you can use Windows on Linux and Linux on Windows.

This Virtual OS will run on top of your main OS as an application. So keep in mind that the Virtual OS does not use all your hardware: your graphics card is emulated (gaming in a virtual OS is impossible, Aero will not work, ...), USB support might not be available, ...

But you can NOT use your existing Vista or Linux at the same time.
So yes, if you want to use Vista inside Linux, you need to do a clean Vista install inside the Virtualization software.

I hope this makes things clear.

Thank you, I understand that even though i wouldn't know how to do it lol -- When I install Ubuntu it put it on my C drive. When I get on Vista and open my C drive their is a Ubuntu folder. So does that mean Ubuntu is on my Vista or just on the drive alone?
