I want to buy a domain but the .com is taken, what are peoples views and experiences with .net?

I have to say I don't very often see a .net high in search results but it may be simply because I don't look enough.

The TLD of the domain hardly matters for SEO ;)

As Red Virus stated. It has nothing to do with SEO so wouldn't worry about it. Just concentrate on doing the right thing with your site whether it was a .net, .com, .info, .org or whatever else extension you plan on buying.

Yes! I agree with both that TLD (Top Level Domain) does not matter for SEO. If you don't get your choice of name as .com then .net is good option that should not be missed.

I own a .net site that ranks way higher than the .com version. It all depends on your SEO effort and content value. However, you may lose traffic to searchers that enter your domain name with a .com into the url bar.. You have to prepare to give away some branding status here..

you can have a .info that is optimized and can be #1 on google. example: search flash cartoons on google and the 1st result is a .org.

I think .net it's pretty good but for me, .org it's same good as .com and .net :)

really it doesn't matter for seo but when people try and remeber your site they might type .com as people are used to doing that, you may want to find another domain name because of that....
But for seo, it really doesn't matter.
I recommend you check the SERP for your chosen keyword of the .com domain, to see if competition with it is going to be tough....

In terms of SEO, the TLD does not matter. But, .com TLDs are indeed the most popular in terms of type-in. In my experience, .net has never been very popular - any sites I've run with .net has not been very successful.

i like to use furl.net for bookmarks but i always end up typing furl.com instead. furl.com is a MFA site and has a great alexa ranking. probably from people meaning to goto furl.net

a .net domain will rank very well if it's keyword rich. I have many .net domains and I can get on the 1st page of Google with no backlinks and very little content just by having the main keyword as part of the domain.

.net and .com are equally good for SEO. Personally, I don't like using the same name as another site but with .net instead of .com.

well, May be the replies given by the all people in this thread based on the SEO, But i prefer only .com at any cost, I never prefer .net. if the wanted .com is registered i look for the different suitable name that i can get for .com, There are some reasons....I believe learners and new comers they are not much familiar with .com and .net terminology. For example if you are referring a website to some one, we use to say like go to yahoo website, not yahoo.com website. In similar way most of the users having the habit of remembering domain name not the extension. Even in my case there are some incidents that after browsing some .net sites, in revisiting those, first i tried with .com and then tried with .net.... So in this case there is chance of loosing your visitors coz of having the .net extension. also having .net extension isr helping the .com site to transfer some of your traffic.

I think its help full to you.
