Will you validate links in your directory

If you have a directory with lots of links, will you validate them, whether they were dead.

I would do that every 3 month and always got several dead links, but I would keep them in my directory as they may get server downtime or server restart. ;)
And I recheck them 3 times in 2 weeks. If they are still dead just remove them, if they are back just keep them active in my directory.

I feel most directory owners wouldn't like dead links in their directories and how long will you validate yours? :)

There might be problem if you run a paid directory and will you remove the dead link? I think the paid one could add this to submission rules.

We validate our links on a regular basis

We consider it an essential component of the integrity of the directory

nothing beats the 'set it and forget it' approach :D

characteristics need to be saved. it shouldn't be hard at all to do. :)

And a cron job for backup would be more helpful :)

If I'm not mistaken, Mia has developed a spider that checks all links in his directory regularly.

Definetly, an alternative way to do it is to let users report dead links with 1 click.

    agreed. user interaction is important.
the crobjob with saving characteristics could do pretty much the same thing, but in a different way.

the user just emails, the cron changes status to pending, and then can shoot off an email to the admins box for human review.

I belive its rather important to have only live links on the directory.

On my directories I use a combination of autochecking and user notification option. Seems to work quite well.

Yuo could use w3c's linkchecker if you have nothing else. Prompt all you links on one page and submit it http://validator.w3.org/checklink (worked well for me until I got my auto check coded)

I agree. To be able to have a successful website user interaction must be present. Just like Myspace and Youtube. ;)

That's important but at first few people would like report dead link and cron job would be the better choice. :)
