not actually banned but the pages with duplicate content will not be indexed and if indexed then go through sudden de-indexing...so NO question of PR or rankings.

This, only visitors which actually come to your site directly can read it. You won't get any benefit from the search engine.

    BAH!!!!

Google uses a % figure for duplicate content. To use duplicate content all you need to do is add more to the page and break up the code.

They are quite happy to index content where you have ( for example )

    summary

new content ( quote form / image / internal link )

    First half of the article

new content ( quote form / image / internal link ) - also consider dropping a rss feed in a div float right to mix it up even more

    second half of the article

new content ( quote form / image / internal link )

Hope this helps - Never Say Never find the path to you goal

    Cheers,

    Aphp

may b u r talking bout article spinning...

"Although article spinning may, at least for now, fool the search engines, it produces pages that are of poor quality for humans to read_wiki"

I had tried it several times but got poor results even with manual spinning...few others might be doing well:D

As general rule, Google love those who have new, unique and interesting contents. One might possible to help you is to get ideas or some sentences from series of related articles and come up with a new more informative one.
