Hi, I am usually over in the writing part of Digital Point, but I have a question. I thik I have had a brilliant idea for creating a site that uses RSS feeds to keep me and my writer friends up to date with jobs. The only thing is, I am not sure if my site is slowed down because of the feeds. To me, it looks great, and doesn't seem slow at all. Is there anyway anyone would check it out and let me know if it seems slow or not? Maybe it would be slow on dial up, but I really don't have a way of knowing. Thanks, Charisse the site is here: http://www.writerleads.com
Hi Charisse. Works pretty fast. However, those rss2html pieces look rather alien in those iFrames with scrollbars. Try my feed2JavaScript instead. You might like it better (not trashing a competitor, just suggesting a more flexible option). Leo.
Ok, I will tell you what I am "trying" to do... I read that you can put the RSS in HTML and it will be picked up as SEO; however, I am really out of my league here, and trying this. I read that Java doesn't get picked up in search engines, so I took the feeds and converted them to HTML... I like the scroll bars, because it gives easier reading- I think- but, I know it looks different... If the rss-html thing is right, then they should get picked up...but then..lol.. I don't know if it will get picked up in frames... but thanks for letting me know how the speed was, I appreciate it.
JavaScript is invisible to the SEs - true. However, your rss2html pieces are even more invisible. As you can see, they're iFrames with scrollbars. An iFrame is essentially an external page within a page. Just right-click inside the iFrame, then click "Properties". You will see that the URL is http://www.rss2html.com/rss2html.ph...LE=http://austin.craigslist.org/wri/index.rss - so it's not even a part of your page. Look at the source code - this does absolutely nothing for your SEO (improves rss2html.com SEO though). Hate to pop your bubble, but better now than late.
Don't worry, I like blowing bubbles. There must be some way to figure out the SEO and RSS thing, I like the frames because when I click on a job, it doesn't take me to an outside site, but keeps me locked in to my site. I don't know if that would happen without the frames. When I made the Rss Html, I couldn't get it to show on the webpge without doing the frames; I think it has something to do with that PHP thingy, that I know absolutely nothing about, and don't have time to figure it out and servers...blah blah... it gives me a headache really...lol I just play with the thing until it works, so I ended up with iFrames and thought I would keep it, since the sites stay in my frame- I really like that part. But otherwise, without doing the java, I had no clue how to make the RSS feed show up in the website. (of course, without a hyperlink) Thanks, Charisse
