    hi,

    i was coding one search engine, and was wondering which type of URL will help more in SEO

    Option 1 ::
    mydomain.com/read_result.php?id=12345&name=Name for That Particular Result

    Option 2 ::
    Using URL Rewrite
    mydomain.com/id=12345/name=Name for That Particular Result

    :rolleyes:

    The fewer variables the better... but none is the best. What system are you using that produces those.. Dot Net Nuke.. or..?

    URL doesn't have a direct effect on ranking. You can use any domains. In the end, it boils down to quality linkbuilding.

    Dynamic URLs are not at all considered SEO friendly. However, fewer the number of variables, the better it is for SEO. HTML URLs are considered to be the best for SEO purpose, only if they are used properly.

    Where did this idea come from?

    URL's can have both positive and negative effects. About a year and a half ago domains with a hyphen were seriously hit. A search for 'cheap tickets' in google doesn't have a single hypenated domain in the top 30 today.

    Yet, a search for 'concert tickets' reveals several URL's such as www.vividseats.com/concerts/, www.ticketsnow.com/Concert_Tickets.html, and www.coasttocoasttickets.com/concerts/ in the top 10!

    That should put to rest any idea that URLs do not effect ranking.

    It looks like this is some sort of .Net crap URLs that get created. Install an ISAPI rewrite module on the server and rewrite the URLs to be keyword rich and with no parameters or other garbage, just keywords. This is VERY powerful in ranking sites still to this day.

    So from reading all the posts above i conclude that option 2 is better.

    Option 2 ::
    Using URL Rewrite
    mydomain.com/12345/Name for That Particular Result <<------ Changed it a Bit, No '='

    ok, so two more choice in it

    Like Option 2 ::
    mydomain.com/12345/Name for That Particular Result

    Option 3
    mydomain.com/Name for That Particular Result/12345/

    the number is really important for the script to see which result the User wants to see since the Name for That Particular Result can be repeted, so its not unique.

    any solutions for this ??

    I am Using PHP only for this (at present) and plan to do URL rewrite without the [R] option in .htaccess

    and Ya, thank you all the above posters for their feedback.

    Already very good, the way I'd prefer is mydomain.com/12345-Name-for That-Particular-Result.html or mydomain.com/12345-Name-for That-Particular-Result/

    This way you still have your identifier number and don't create unnecessary subdirectories.

    I think the second one is the best among the two. Since it has less parameters but two parameters are quiet good from Seo Point of view.The Most efficient way is to have the Static i.e HTML based URLs that are being loved by the search Engine Crawlers.

    Yeah, the hyphen thing made everyone freak out and think that putting hyphens in your URL was "spammy"...what a load of BS. The fact that hyphenated domains are not in the top 30 for one search query doesn't prove anything.

    There are numerous search results that come back from fully dynamic pages with no keyword in the URL. While you'll hear people tell you that getting the keyword in there as much as possible is the most important thing, there are other factors to consider.

    Now I'm not saying that putting keywords in the URL does nothing, I'm just saying that I don't feel that it's anywhere near as important as what others will make you think it is, as I've seen success with both styles of URL.

    The one thing that is solid truth though, is you don't want to have any more than 4 arguments or variables in your URL string. Other than that...it's all a matter of how well you've optimized your page.

    When using query strings, you should use the least amount possible. No cute programming concepts will help you.

    But when you move to modrewrite (SEO Friendly URL) then don't use any. Use the format http://www.mydomainname.com/keyword-phrase-target. Use only one or two hyphens (-) and never an underscore (_).
