Will too much backlinking hurt your site? Debate

    Two Questions:

First question: I'm backlinking for a friend's website - I use dofollow Social BM, forums/blogs, and a couple of directories. I started about a week ago. I do about 10-15 backlinks a day (w/ anchor text of course). Before, this site, at least from my knowledge, wasn't being backlinked at all. I'm concentrating on four niches...and within a week, the website has dropped in the SERPs w/in all niches.

Now, I know you guys are going to say that I should be more patient - and I would agree with you. This is the first time I'm backlinking for someone else's site and I don't want to screw it up (even though my own sites, I almost always got on the first page of any of my niches). So basically, I should be more patient and continue backlinking 10-15 everyday - correct? And is 10-15 links to much?

Second question, the site I'm backlinking to is PR2. I always backlink from sites that are the same theme of my friend's website, therefore, staying "on-topic". However, these PR of the sites that I backlink from usually don't have a PR (and I'm talking about the index page). I really can't find a blog/forum that has a good PR that is the same theme as my friend's site. So, would it be better to backlink from a "non-topic" blog that has a PR of 5 than an "on-topic" blog that has a PR of 0 or 1?

Too much backlinks (thousands with the same anchor text for example) could temporarily hurt your brand new site.
However in just a few weeks you will be back in the game if you continue to publish original content and get some more quality backlinks.

The theory goes something like this: take off your IM hat and put on an "ordinary joe" hat, and then put on a "google" hat. Would a new website suddenly have 100s or 1,000s of backlinks all coming from the same domains? Does that look a little fishy?

Wouldn't a popular site be spread all over the net or at least spread around to a few different places?

Also, look at what google does say concerning backlinks. Think about it for a moment...would people start linking to your site using the EXACT same work or phrase again and again? Not likely, unless the keyword is the same as the site name or your name is your brand.

For example, you could probably get away with using your name as pretty much the only anchor link if your name was "warren buffet". If that's who people are looking for when they go to the search engine, then when you link to Berkshire Hathaway, what else are you going to anchor the URL with? His name or possible Berkshire Hathaway.

Now, if you are in the internet marketing niche, that's a different story. People are searching for the term "internet marketing", but people might also naturally send you a link for "the best internet marketing guy on the planet". Or, "check out this internet marketing website", or "internet marketing for beginners". Make sense?

    Thanks for all your answers.

I guess what I was trying to aim at another way is this:

Would you backlink from a site that is PR of 0 - but it has the same content as yours?

    OR

Would you backlink from a sit that is PR 5 - but it has different content than your site?

Well backlinks from all kinds of sources is good, but I would concentrate on relavant sites that havd similar content. I always build links slowly on new sites and do vary that anchor text like crazy at first too.

Quality if better than quantity, so aim for high PR and relavent sites. Aslong as you build links consistantly I cant see there being a problem on how many you build.
