Does the city meta tag help the sites targetting specific cities? Also what about the expire meta tag? If you set it to expire after a day or so manually, will this encourage the robots to crawl your site on mentioned date? This is assuming your content keeps on changing at same frequency!! What's your say on this? Is it something that will help or will it give a bad rep to my site?
Not at all. I say, stay away from any meta tags other than keyword and description unless you know what you're doing.
While I can't say what others are doing, I've used city/state metas for most all our geo-regional oriented sites for years. It hasn't hurt them, though I can't say for sure whether it's helped them either. All the sites are positioned well for both configs. generic example: <META NAME="description" CONTENT="Cosmetic Dentist Akron Ohio"> <META NAME="keywords" CONTENT="Akron Ohio dentist Dr. Hugh Smith provides cosmetic dentistry to webmasters for reduced rates."> <META http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1"> <META NAME="city" CONTENT="akron"> <META NAME="state" CONTENT="ohio"> <META NAME="country" CONTENT="usa, united states of america"> Code (markup):
You won't hurt your rankings by using it, but it won't do you much good either. The website's location is taken from it's server location, tld and the location of the sites that link to it.
I gather that keeping the city tag does not affect the ranks. So I will continue to keep it. And what about expire meta tags? Is any one using it?
The only header tags really worth worrying about are title, description and keywords, I wouldn't bother with anything else.
simply go with the keywords and description for the meta tags. using some of the other fancy ones you can use may cause loads of problems for you unless your really knowledgable about that sort of thing.
I guess submitting the expire content in the header (not the meta tags), helps in getting the bots more frequently. But one has to make sure that the content is updated once the page expires, otherwise it might be like we are consuming the SE's resources for nothing and might be penalized. So better be sure before you do anything like this.
