Hi there, Im the owner of a couple of small wordpress based blog sites. Currently my pages dont have got a meta description. Is this bad for my ranking? Id like to give http://yoast.com/wordpress/seo/ a shot. What do you guys recommend? Please let me know! Cheers
I wouldn't say lack of meta description is bad for ranking, but it's a nice piece of text to have in search results. Worded right, it can help to increase CTR. It's definitely a good plugin, the best "SEO" one. These days though, think less about SEO of an article and focus on whether it's something people will enjoy reading.
This Plugin won't create wonders but it will definitely help in improving On page Seo Score which will help in overall SEO Efforts.
Not having a catchy meta description means forfeiting a great opportunity to tell search engines and users what you offer and what you’d like to be ranked for...In the absence of one, Google picks a random snippet of your text (usually from your page or DMOZ) as it may deem fit. WordPress SEO by Yoast is great... it has a snippet preview in the write post screen that'll help you optimize your titles, meta descriptions and copy instantly while working on your posts and pages.
Yoast is so much better than AIOSEO. I remember my first blog, it was a totally personal blog with no focus to it, and it wasn't getting any traffic. I use Yoast and instantly was getting 20 a day without any additional work. I don't believe in miracle plugins or miracle solutions, but that day was the day I realized how powerful SEO is.

It's the humans who search and look at the results and decide what to click on. So if you have a good description for humans, then you have an increased chance of your result being clicked on. Of course, it helps the higher you are in search but when you're in the top 3 (or even 5) standing out from the rest can help. For example, why click on a result that doesn't contain the keywords in the description? If it doesn't seem relevant, even if it's #1, someone might then look at #2 and #3.
