Will the real results count please stand up?

Any clue why the number of results on the SERPS is so much higher than the results on G Suggest for the same keyword phrase?
I've heard of the "bad data push" excuse and the one spam site (falsely) claiming 5 billion pages indexed a couple months ago, but it looks like the serps results count is still not right. Or is this a well-known issue that everybody but me is well aware of?

Google is still smoking crack. It's also messed up with site: searches. Compair google.com and the datacenter results here.
