This is comparing apples with oranges.

Wikia is not a search engine, but a directory with a search feature. When these guys manage to cover at least 5% of the websites out there, maybe I'll start considering them

google is far more popular, And though it may have some advancements over google at current, It simply won't be employed by the average joe, because in short it works.

I don't see any threat to Google, as wikia is simply a hosted wiki solution. Anyway, nobody can takeover Google, for at-least next 3 year Google will be the Search Engine pioneer. :)

Tip: You can search directly in wikipedia via the Google search engine. Just use wiki before the actual keyword (eg.: wiki SEO) and Google will present the first result from wikipedia.

the only way this new search engine will get popular is if it will be advertised all over wikipedia and even then it wont be as popular as google.

    Eh, Google?

I see potential but I don't even see this scratching MSN, Live, Yahoo, Dogpile or Ask. I can see this SE improving alot though but to overtake any of the major players? Eh, I really don't see that happening :\

I think it'll likely end up more like how many perceive DMOZ to be now... a bunch of Geocities sites from the mid 90's and the many sites of editors. Even WIKI itself is turning into that, as the people in charge remove relevant links, while seemingly promoting others. Either way, a search engine for the people by the people will likely end up as little more then a paid for SERP SE that no one will bother with.

I wonder if all the #1 SERPed WIKI sites will loose their power though, heh... google I think can be funny that way.

But then, look, I just made a post of nothing but my own loop sided opinions,

I just did a few searches, and what I got back was garbage. People will use it only if it gives them back quality results.

I beleive that it can actually work if they combine the power of social aspect as well a traditional search engines.
I have seen many of my friends going directly to wikipedia when they are looking for pure informational stuff. They do beleive that they can get more information on wikipedia. But when they are looking to buy some item, reviews etc they go directly to google.

It will take lot of wfforts and high technology to beat google. But it can be done!

Search is part of the fundamental infrastructure of the Internet. And we are making it open source. It will start to change search from being proprietary, top-down, and closed. - Jimmy Wales, founder , Wikia

Well I can’t understand what is meant by an 'open source' search? Does it mean that the search will be free of any advertisement so that only relevant search results get displayed on the search pages ?

I think Google is already displaying relevant search results on it’s SERPs. Though many people may have reservation that it is earning a huge some of money by displaying sponsored Ads along with the organic results, I think it’s a two-way street. It has been observed in many studies that more than 80% of users click on first 10 results of a Search results. So what should others do who can’t get into the top 10 of Google ? At least Google give them a way out by means of an Adword ad. If you have money to spend you can be on the first page of Google. This is a very powerful and effective facility. No matter how hard one work on his link building, creating contents and other SEO stuff, there is no guarantee to get into top 10 of a result page given the tough competition in most of the niches. So there will always be a need for the concepts like ‘Adwords’ which creates a level playing field for most players. If you have time and skills, make your site better in organic search; if you don't have time but have money, then use Adwords to be in the first page. Simple !

Google has become a billion dollar company and I think they are doing everything to make their search results relevant to the end users. So I don’t think Wikia has any strong reason to complaint that Google search results are ‘proprietary, top-down, and closed’. They are not.
