will the new wikia search take over google

wikia is the project worked upon by the wikimedia group the same
    people behind wikipedia

the aim of the project is to make search opensource or something like that
while google plays with the webmaster altering the pageranks and serps
will this new approach where people are able to rank the web search will dominate in the future(sounds like digg.com doesnt it)
this also raises the question that spammers and fraudsters will try to take over the search business by promoting their own websites

here is the link to have a look
    http://www.wikia.com
    whats your say

The social aspect of the net will never replace the classic search engines. People trust Yahoo. Google. LIVE and others to get their results and i just dont see this search engine crushing the others.

    My thoughts about this:
    1. Google is brand, wikia is not a brand.
    2. There were many companies that wanted to build a better, bigger search engine than Google...guess what? They failed.
    3. The problem behind wikia SE is that if people get the chance to modify search results, than every black hat webmaster will try to dominate it and guess what...they will dominate the SERPs.

I think it will create a dent when it is released, but after that no one hears about them again. In a few years time we will read a story about how wikia has finally decided to shut down it's services.

    Let's not be too dismissive.

Wiki (at least to me) has a very strong brand.

They just haven't taken advantage of it yet, the way Google has.

Wiki has as much credibility as Google (in many corners of the web) if not more.

But, asking if Google can be beat in a Google forum is like asking is Windows better than Macintosh on an Apple fan website.

Its the end-user they have to convince, not the webmasters. Its going to be very hard to do because most people don't see anything wrong with google.

Google created history because of its hard work, marketing tactics and business acumen which is not achieved on a single day. It took years to achieve that status. If at all wiki makes a good progress in search results, it will be slow when compared to the google's growth and will take a lot of time :D

It isn't scary, it is scarce, there are so few results which are hardly of relevance to what I am searching for. This is not way to fight Google at all. Totally disappointed with it, they might as well cooperate with Yahoo or MSN to licensed their search technology. With the current alpha release I don't think it can even compete with small search engines like those powered by Gossamer Search Engine.....

Since Google have been in the business longer, i think they will be ahead of the game no matter what, the wikia thing i believe will be users content, and spammers are gonna pretty much lock this down.
If spamming Google wasnt enough imagine something like this, its not gonna be big, and its going to end up pretty spammable, and will attract a lot of attention, but it will still not get nowhere near Google, Yahoo or MSN, as these are pretty much defaults.

Like when you get a new pc, install your Windows etc... Its usually defaulted to MSN search, most quickly change to Google.com as its branded and a household name, same with Yahoo, they set your page when you install Yahoo Messenger, Google does the same in a few products too.

So unless Wikia get some huge everyday-usuable software to set the homepage for the people who dont know how to untick the checkboxes, they will not win the SE wars :D

And one more thing, who is to say the owner of Wikipedia and all wont sell out if it does become popular, if Google see's a threat who knows they could just buy it all over, im sure the owner does have a price he would sell at :p
After all doesnt most of his money come from donations, im sure if he seen a big figure he would.

Sorry for double post :) forgot to add this

I don't think they agree to sell, thats why Google is creating their own wiki. And in retailation , Wiki is creating their own search engine. But I guess the differences in financial muscles and technology is pretty obvious.
