Ok, I was driving a while ago, and saw a guy holding a cardboard sign, "Will work for food." I was thinking, would these guys do simple data entry? That'd be great! Could you imagine training one of them to do basic computer stuff, and paying them in leftovers? Anyways, if someone wants to test my idea, and let me know how it works, I'd appreciate it
Probably would, but I wouldn't really want to knowing that the person is just going to sleep on the street every night. If you give them a place to stay as well as food in exchange for the work then I would get weirded out by it, and they would probably steal from you if they had the chance.
But they would need to be supplied with a computer in the first place. You can try working with your local welfare organization, maybe supply a few 2nd hand computer in the welfare centre and pay per hour. That may work.
Or if you have some decent income/backing... buy a older house, convert it into single rooms with community bathrooms. Then convert the living room into a work center. Have the people work for you, and hire someone to cook the 3 meals of the day! They do the work, they get to eat/sleep there. Better believe they won't do anything to jeopardize it.
You know...sounds crazy and all...but I've seen stranger things happen. There is the right BSer out there that could pull somthing like that off. JR
Plus you could probably get backing from the government in terms of grants if the right cards were played.
Your helping the public, you could possibly get free radio and tv advertising for doing the "community" a service. Hmmmm. I'm starting to wish there was homeless people wandering around my town..
What a great idea, we should really start something like this - maybe even an agency. Companies who need basic data entry pay a couple dollars an hour which goes towards housing and feeding the homeless people and they do some basic data entry work, I'm sure with the proper plans in place you could get some government backing. I'd be interested in helping out
Uhh....hello? Will work for food signs are usually BS to elicit sympathy. What the sign should really say is: I want you to believe I willl work for food (I'm starving..but a hard worker)and I know you won't really offer me a job but out of sympathy you will hand me two bucks and when 10 suckers in a row give me two bucks I'm going to go and get wasted, pass out and do it all over again tomorrow! At the bottom of the sign it should say: PS: I pray another do gooder doesn't offer me a job doing data entry! data entry & getting wasted are totally incompatibile.
I enjoy doing data entry while drunk (or at least tipsy), makes it more fun. Of course I wouldn't do this if it was someone elses data I was entering though...only mine, it's fine if I make mistakes on my stuff.
I'd pay them in money or take them to McDonalds or something if they did a few hours data entry. I'd also ask to them to tell their mates on the street the offer's open to them and I'd probably allow them access to my computers anytime and give them a few lessons. It'd give them something to do for some time during the week especially in the winter when it's cold. Seasons Greetings, Dave
I think that this is a noble idea as you are giving them work and food, So that they earn and make a nice living. I think that it is pretty much possible.
i was homeless for 3 years, my parents kicked me out when i turned 18. i couch surfed for awhile, then camped for awhile, then got sick of it and started spending alot of my time on the library computers setting up sites. now i am no longer homeless thanks internet. kind of sounds like that "beach bum makes $98205290#*%" ebook spam i keep getting every day now that i think about it.... *edit* just want to clarify something, i would never in my life hold a sign on the side of the road like that. i always had money while i was homeless, it was almost by choice at the time. was just partying to much i guess, hard to explain. but i never begged for money, and i showered every day.
