Will sharing popular articles badly impact google rankings?

I read in a book that Panda and Penguin take into account unique content, therefore if an article you publish does not pass Copyscape or similar, your website will be penalised for having such articles.
I am wondering what happens if I share popular articles in my website, or I quote large parts of third parties' articles just to comment on them... will my website be penalised?

    thanks!

If you provide a link to the source you shouldn't have a problem. IE - Share a news article with your readers.

However, you wouldn't want to base your ENTIRE website on this model. Some content is meant to be shared, Google knows that. That's what going "viral" is all about.

If you really are sharing the content purely for the benefit of your readers, it might be a good idea to write a short article to summarize what you're sharing and then link to it instead. That way you can share the article AND publish unqiue content.

    Hope that helps.

If, as you say, you just quote sections of an article published elsewhere to make comments about it, then you should not have any problem.

thanks for the replies, I know you are trying to help, but they don't really address what my concern is.
You are referring to sharing content as: legal vs illegal.
I meant sharing content as: getting Google algorhytms (i.e. Panda and Penguin) penalise you in rankings because they find that your content is not unique.
Please only reply in relation to that.
