Will relocating content from the index page hurt ranking?

I am playing with this site

    How To Properly...

And I'm thinking about redoing the index page so that it only contains links to the individual posts (instead of having all of the content on that page).

Currently this site gets top result for how to properly. What kind of keyword ranking change should I expect if I rearranged the content as described?

I don't think it will hurt you.

One of my sites turns up in searchs for things that are only on pages within the site. They are linked to from the main page. The listed page is always the index page of the site.

Just be sure to keep some "content" on the main page.
