Will redirecting a domain affect my SERP?

hey guys, I have a quick question.

I have a client that wants me to register a domain for them, but I have suggested to the that they get the .com, and the .com.au (as it is an australian business).

    so for example - website.com and website.com.au

the thing is the website.com.au will just redirect straight to the .com,

    My questions are:
    1. Will this affect my SERP?
    2. Would it be better for the australian search engines if it was the other way around, main site on the .com.au, and the .com redirected?

    thanks guys!

My opinion. Register just one domain. You need to take care about duplicate content, its penalized by Google!

no im not saying duplicate content.

i am talking about redirecting one domain to the other.

so when people type in the .com.au domain, it takes them to the .com domain.

No Problems as such, unless you are planning a black hat trick :)

Earlier.. and even now, what people tend to do is, get pretty much of backlinks for a domain by signing it up at linkmarket or other link places and then redirect the domain to another one (301) providing the the new domain with one-way links..

    But however in your case,

If both the sites are up n live as of now, you may se a flux with your SERPS once the 301 is recognized by the SE's..

If your sites are not online as of now, then I would suggest, go for one domain, and put in all ur efforts there only.. two domains means double work and then merging the work of one with another..Better handle one .. but that really depends on whats the case.. site being online now or thats still a plan..

If target market audience is Australia, then this option is ok.. however if the .com is hosted at australia, and backlinks are from australia only and then redirecting the .com tld domain, even then the SERPS at australian SE's can be captured.. For Reigonal SERPS 3 points to be lept in mind:

    1. Domain TLD
    2. Domain hosted at that location
    3. Backlinks from the reigonal ilsted sites or from target market segment..

If these are satisified, content is great, backlinks are good, go for it, and you can see a rise in ur SERPS soon..

    Hope that helps ya..

    Regards
    LKS

Trust me, i tryed this trick i one of my sites.
Result: in SERP, sometimes appear 1st domain, sometimes the 2nd domain. Today you will see the domain com.au on SERP, tomorrow .com domain will be in SERP, in another position, nearly by com.au domain. Will be a mess!
Trust me, make a good website for a good domain and its enough.
