Will putting a Wordpress post in multiple categories cause a duplicate penalty?

If you have a post in Wordpress and let's say it's under, gadgets, and tech news, will Google find anything that suggestion duplicate content or internal duplicate content?

I personally think so, although I do not have a specific example. I usually just have a summary on the category pages anyway, so the entire content would be effected anyway.

I am torn as to how to list the categories though...

No, it will not. The entire post will still only show up as one entry, no matter which category its in. Yes, it's possible that it will show up under a couple different categories, but search engines will recognize each page as individual and will not consider any of the content to be duplicate data. The links will go to the same post, not a different post. You will be fine posting in multiple categories -- I do it, along with many other people.

As a side note, SEO expert Matt Cutts does it as well.

I rarely include the full post.

I usually add a paragraph and than stick in the more tag. Usually my posts are pretty long.

Does that change anything or make it better?

its just categorizing it, not creating duplicate pages so you will be fine.

The fact is that you are creating duplicate content. I know that many do have multi category postings and will fight to the end that it wont dupe your content.

My thought is "Why leave anything to chance?" If I do use a multi category posting, I will only place a custom summary for the category pages. The content on the posting page will be distinct from any category page on the site. I actually use the summary that shows in the RSS feed for my category pages.

In the end, Google I am sure takes these situations into account. If I'm spending time and money on content, I like to make sure I cover all of my bases.

I know this is an old thread, but...

Isn't the dup content more of an issue on different domains? Not so much what you do on your own site?

I don't think there will be any duplicate filter (not penalty). If you setup pages to show without categories, there won't be duplicate pages.

If anything, probably having a post related to only one category will make your categories more focused and your visitors won't have to sift through the same posts in different categories.

Think of your visitors first, SEs second.

At any rate, though, if you don't yourself post the same content all over the place, you should be fine.

I actually experienced this very problem, and did seem to get penalized for it.

When I fixed it – by adding "no index, follow" to the Meta tags of my categories – the penalty went away and my traffic came back... and then some.

I have since blocked the indexing (but not the following) of pretty much every page except the posts pages and index page, and the SERPS have treated me kindly.

Will the SEs penalize you for categories? I don't know, but I do know its easy to stop it from happening in the first place, so that's the way I deal with it now.

Just my 2 cents, but it could also just be a coincidence.

One thing for sure though, my traffic certainly hasn't gone down since doing this.
