Will Long Tail Articles Boost My Short-Term Ranking?

Lets say I have a site that focuses around Cat Food.

I am ranking for the top 10 for Cat Food, Cats Food, and Cat Food.

Now I want to rank for longer tail terms, lets say Cat Food for Kittens.

I've decided that I need to add more content to my site. So i write an article on Cat Food for Kittens, and place it on my site.

Soon, Cat Food for kittens article on my site gets ranked, correct?

And when ti does, will this also boost me up for my rankings for Cat Food?

Also, can I also submit this article to article directories? Or is it a bad decision to put the same article on your site that you've also submitted to dozens of directories?

Also -- is it risky to submit the same article to many directories, even if you're simply doing it for backlinks?

    Thanks a ton,
    MWM
