Will linking to interior pages adds more weight to the index page, thus making the index page rank higher in s engines?

    Thx!

Yes. Google's PageRank is distributed among links within your site. If you have a large site, linking to your interior pages (deep links) will help to get all the search engines to dig deeper.

Yup that's very true, in turn your internal pages get PR also, then as a result (assuming your index page is on the page) your index page gets another quality link back to it, even your own pages and links count as a positive aspect.

Sorry for the confusion guys. All incoming links to interior pages are all external links. Will the index page gain benefit from those incoming links?

I don't think so, internal pages are gonna outrank index page if u have more links to internal links then u have for ur index page.

this happened to me, I made this mistake, my home page was outranked by another internal page:(
