I'm trying to get my site on a google for a keyword that gets over 30000 searches a month. The sites on the first page are mostly pr 2+, but they dont have more than 300 backlinks. So I think if i build more backlinks I'll be able to outrank them. Is this true, will I be able to?

Shouldn't be too bad, but the quality of those 300 backlinks is much more important than the quantity. Simple getting more isn't necessarily going to get you ahead. Look at how those sites are targeting the keyword in question and consider how you can do better than that. For example, is the keyword in the title tag of your competitors?

30k is the exact search or broad search? if broad search, then its not too bad. only moderate competition which will not be very hard to outrank. go for it but remember, quality of links count more than quantity. try to build relevant contextual links and you should be ok

If broad search then it is easy pickings. Even with 300 links you may be able to outrank them in no time if thier links are low PR with little anchor text. The key is when going in for the kill is knowing your competitors backlinks pr and anchor.

Doesn't matter. If the top 10 sites are properly optimized and have SEO specialist working on them - it would be tough to get on the first page. Try a different niche and see how it goes.

Even in competitive niches I have seen poor on page seo. In many cases on the first page of google there is often one or two poorly optimized pages.

In my own experiences, if such search volume is only a broad match, it is not hard to out rank it within a month.

Analyzing your competitors and writing your title tags and meta description tags tactically, spraying your targeted keywords in your page contents and using your targeted keywords as anchor text when you build backlinks for your sites would be OK for this purpose. :)

    Have a nice day,

Just make sure you get authority backlinks and you can easily outrank them.

This is rediculous i looked at the top site and it has an alexa ranking of about 1.5 million. But it probably gets most of the traffic, so why is alexa ranking so low. also it says it gets most of the search quaries not from this keyword, but from another that gets less searches. I dont understand, is this a good keyword? Google says it get 30000 searches a month.

The backlinks will help a great deal BUT other factors do play a part like
The Quality of Backlinks, if you have 300 x PR0 backlinks and the sites on the first page have 300 PR1 you own't be anywhere near them, quality of backlink counts greatly. Having said that if they 300 PR0 backlinks and you have 50 PR4 you could well rank better and get a high page rank at googles next pagerank review

    Also these count too
    Age of domain
Whether the keywords are in the URL.
