    Try to optimize your onpage, content and link structure. That's the best way to rank for a site.

    Directory submission helps in long run as it takes time to get approved and again more time to be cached by search engine.

    It's not an effective manner to get the good ranking,but if the competition is very low,then you can get the good ranking,but generally it's not happening.

    yes with directory submission you can get good rank on low competition keywords. But if you are targeting high competition keywords then you have to do all off page and on page works continually.
