My question is simple. will i get banned for translating an article?

Theres a very good article I found in my local language, and I'd like to translate it. will Google ban me for this?

Another Question: Should I mention the source?

I don't know... I think because I've heard someone saying that they caught him for doing this. and I don't want to use the whole article. just half of it. I'd like more suggestions so I won't do something stupid.

if the author of the original article do find out you have translated his article without prior notification, he/she may report it to google adsense and if he/she has strong proof that he own the article adsense may suspend your account though I have only heard of others saying it but have not experience it myself.

To play it safe, you may want to mention the origin of article

Do not translate an article without the author's permission. You may translate your own articles in as many languages as you like.

If you're not going to contact the author, you should definitely mention the source. And even if you do contact the author, it's a good idea to mention the source anyways to give him some credit and stay out of legal trouble.

We do it all the time. Don't think we would get banned.

Plus it amuses me seeing Google Ads in French :)

You won't get banned but you should give backlink to original article ethically (It's my opinion.)
