I am stuck with a silly template that has my items showing in very small font. I would like to us html tags <big></big>. Will I get penalized by google for over-optimization?

I'm not sure about <big>..honestly I've never heard of that..but you shouldn't get penalized for doing something like::

    <font size="+2">text</font> ..or.. <font size="+3">text</font>...and so on

Well it has been a day and a half and I have remained in the same SERP so no damage done. Thanks so much for taking time to reply.

You should do any design changes in CSS instead to keep the code on your site as clean as possible.

You won't get penalised - but you will get 'marked down', so to speak, if your site doesn't provide a good 'user experience' - so be careful with design
