    Google will not place you into any sandbox for any links as you cannot control people making links to your website and they understand this. All Google will do is ignore rubbish links and not count them. I would avoid most paid directories. Make sure you are in DMOZ even though it will take you about a year to be placed in their directory but it is still worth it in the long run.

    As long as you don't link back to them, all directories are safe.
