Will Google penalise my site for this?

I have been contacted by a person, offering to pay $30 in return for adding one sentence and a link to a Bingo site, on the home page of a cooking / recipe site for a three month period.

My question to you all is whether you think that doing this will penalise either my Google ranking or my Adsense earnings?

I'd be grateful for your thoughts on this.

    Jon

It shouldn't penalize your site unless the Bingo site is some sort of link farm. I don't know what your pagerank is for your site, but it will most likely lose page rank if you link to the Bingo site. If your pagerank is 4 or above, I wouldn't give him the link for 30 bucks.

In simple terms your link to their site is a vote. If their site is a bad neighbour then this may impact your site. If in doubt do not add the link.

If the site you're linking to is okay, then I think you won't have any problems.

Does the site have a page rank? I've read somewhere that, if Google gives it a page rank, then this indicates that it views it as OK and is not a "bad neighbourhood". Am I right in this?

Obviously, though, the link would still devalue your site - and you also need to think whether your customers would be impressed by a link to a Bingo site.

Try to avoid getting into any link exchange form, instead link to websites that is related and helpful for your website visitors ;)

    Well ...

I dont like to reject money (especially during this economic crunch) but at the same time if its not
relevant to your sites theme what good will it do your visitors?

Chances are this guy is only trying to link to you as you probably have a high page rank or your site
gets mega traffic so "if" i did decided to add it i would make the link "No follow" so he cant collect on
the PR juice (if those are his intentions) as he will still get the traffic so he shouldnt mind then.

(you wont get penalized if its no follow.... Im pretty sure anyway, but dont quote me on this)

    PS...

just so you are aware, gambling, adult , pharmacy are the most notorious in spamming non relevant sites
so i would choose wisely whether or not to add them

    thx

If the website you link to is good and has no spam and has good content or at least worth, you will be more than safe with your $30 and your Google ranking

I think it depends on the Bingo (and your site) site if it is not a good site or yes - if the Bingo can get a Google penalty, then your site can too. You should not link to any bad sites.

Check his site first, if the site has good indexed pages, backlinks and relevant content. Go ahead!

If you trade openly or someone reported your site about this than you will get penalized . If you trade such things personal in hidden manner than you have o.oo1% chances of penalized .

You may get some penalty from Google but you will never get any penalty from Adsense.

Thanks for all of your replies. As usual, the forum has produced some excellent advice.

Since Christmas, my Adsense earnings have taken off again and so I'm going to continue with that, plus selected adverts targeted towards my website content, rather than going "off-topic".

Thanks again to everyone who took the time to respond.

It's not worth taking this kind of risk. If you are earning well in adsense then why bother about $30 in the first place? Look for something long term.

Not enough $$$ on the table to jeopardize your work and effort.

I've seen these offers before and have always ignored them.
