If the domain has been dropped will google keep the PR on next update if all the inbound links remain?

As long as it keeps its backilinks and you can get a site up on it quick enough it will more than likely keep its PR value, if there are no backlinks then it will go in the next update.

    IMO

I guess you mean "if google does not show the backlinks..." since if it does not have backlinks then there is no way to keep PR as far as i know?

It will keep for sure, but how long I can't say, I mean how long after next update...

I remember picking up a dropped domain name which had it's PageRank still in tact. I guess you could assume that if a domain is dropped and hasn't had a PR Update, it retains the PR? And by the time Google comes to the next update, it sees that it has a new owner, but the Pagerank still remained for me.

You should install the GoDaddy Search Toolbar and the Google Toolbar. If you come across a dead domain which has PR, type it into GoDaddy and see if it's available. If not, install a toolbar for the WHOIS as well so you can see the WHOIS Information and if it might expire :D

PR is determined by sites linking to you. So if there is no changes on the quality and quantity of the backlinks then the PR will remain as well.
