Will google index my pages? (index.php?page=something)

Discussion in 'Search Engine Optimization' started by SIK, May 8, 2006.

    Question is in the title - will it be indexed by google as a separate page?
    Content is from a txt file.

    Also, what if I put other dynamic pages on a dynamic page?

    index.php?page=category and from there -> category.php?page=article

    Can googlebot follow all that?

    If you understand :)

    Thanks!

    Yup, I think so. Just ensure you have proper internal linking structure so that crawlers can follow these links into all of your pages.

    Google might but others may have problems.

    From Google Help:

    "if you decide to use dynamic pages (i.e., the URL contains a "?" character), be aware that not every search engine spider crawls dynamic pages as well as static pages. It helps to keep the parameters short and the number of them few."

    If you can try and use SEO friendly URL's.

    I would just add that what turfsniffer referred to as SEO friendly URLs, are actually USER-Friendly URLs.

    Compare the two links:
    http://yoursite.com/index.php?category=121&article=8167
    and
    http://yoursite.com/category-name/article-title

    Have you ever started writing a URL in your address bar and a history of visited URLs popped up? You recalled the page/article you'd like to see once again, but hey, all you got in your history was a list of 'category=121&article=8167'-type of URLs...

    Wouldn't it be more friendly to your visitors if you used the second type of URLs?

    Are these friendly URLSs nicknames for the real URL? I am using a precontructed database program called EZdatabase. It is possible to make friendly URLs with this kind of software?

    use permalink instead. what you have right now is a dynamic link which is apparently not SE friendly enough (though sometimes some SEs can index such pages, but it's a rare instance).

    if you'll use permalink, it'll be easy on wp. consequently, you have the knowledge on configuring your .htaccess, then it's your time to pull off that talent! :D

    permalinks will change your dynamic url content to a more understandable and readable content.

    ex: dynamic = http://url.com/cate1?abcdefgpage?efgrhtr
    permalink = http://url.com/category/page/page.html

    honestly, i don't know how to program the .htaccess file. but that's where you store the script for permalinking. in wordpress, it's automatically generated, so i simply cut and paste the code to my .htaccess file. :D

    I would use a mod rewrite to be on the safe side.

    i personally use mod rewrite as well - but one thing I've heard is do NOT use id as your querystring. try to be more descriptive like /products/?productid= instead of /products/?id=. I heard id is less likely to be scraped/indexed.

    Dynamic URLs is not a problem and most search engines (the ones that matter) can read them. Most high profile sites use dynamic pages so they need to keep up.

    just make sure that the part behind the ? is static. if it's static, you should be ok...

    however, if that portion is dynamic - e.g. php session id, then even if google crawls and indexes it, it won't be the same the 2nd time around - so it's worthless...

    Does Google index dynamic pages?
    Yes, Google indexes dynamically generated webpages, including .asp pages, .php pages, and pages with question marks in their URLs. However, these pages can cause problems for our crawler and may be ignored. If you're concerned that your dynamically generated pages are being ignored, you may want to consider creating static copies of these pages for our crawler. If you do this, please be sure to include a robots.txt file that disallows the dynamic pages in order to ensure that these pages aren't seen as having duplicate content. In addition, you might consider creating and submitting a detailed Sitemap. This is an easy way for you to submit all your URLs to the Google index and get detailed reports about the visibility of your pages on Google. You can automatically keep us informed of all of your current pages and of any updates you make to those pages. Please note that submitting a Sitemap doesn't guarantee that all pages of your site will be crawled or included in our search results.
