    Will these url's be followed by google and classed as backlinks for the target site?:

    <a href="#" onclick="window.open('http://www.examplesite.com')">

    <a href="redirect.php?client=exampleclient">
    (this link will perform a redirect in the PHP script to the client's website)

    Hello Omzy.

    The best simple way for me as an SEO to know if a link is a good link or a nofollow link is to simply try to google the page with a specific text, using Google's Cached feature. If your link appears in the Cached feature, its in Google's Servers.

    I would be really sorry to say that these links would not be considered as inbound links to a website as these are some type of java scripts and will not be considered as helpful as an SEO

    I'd say no. I'm sure you have a good reason for it but the effect is same as the attribute 'target=blank'
    e.g. <a href="http://www.examplesite.com" target="_blank">

    http://www.w3schools.com/tags/tag_a.asp
    http://www.w3schools.com/tags/att_a_target.asp

    It depends exactly what you want to achieve, but if you want the spider to permanently record the link as a link to the url "exampleclient" you should ensure your script tells the spider what type of header redirect to apply. The default is 302, you should specify 301 - permanent redirect.

    Try this for more info.:
