Will generating a lot of forum links give you trouble?

    Hi all,

Since I started posting (reading started a lot earlier :D) here on DP I've gained a lot of links to my weblog. There's a link in both my signature and my "recent blog" thingie.

My weblog is only a few months (live since november) old and I didn't do any linkbuilding for it, so there weren't many links to it before. There were some however, some trackbacks and links on some friends blogs and a few forum links which I didn't create myself.

Now, I have about 50 posts here on DP, so this means I've got (assuming google visits recently here) like 100 extra backlinks created in, say, a week or so.

Now I noticed, that since about two days back the traffic from google (which wasn't much, but still about 10 uniques a day), dropped to almost zero.

    My questions:

Could it be that gaining this much links this quick triggered something which google didn't like?

If so, should I remove the links from my sig and recent blog, or should I sit this one out and just keep posting?

    Any advice would be appreciated!

P.S. If this is true, anyone with a lot of posts on this forum could effectively screw anyone else who doesn't have a lot of existing backlinks yet?

IMHO I wouldn't worry about signature links. For a start they aren't very powerful compared to backlinks from say the frontpage of a PR5 site . Nearly everyone has links in their sig so this would be a well known issue if there was indeed a penalty.

I wouldn't worry about it either. If I tripped some filter with my sites, I really wouldn't care all that much as I'm in this long-term, not just to get quick money.

You both are right of course. However, my weblog did not yet have any high PR links, so these +/- 100 backlinks are a huge increase.

I think I'll remove the one in the signature and wait a few days to see if it has any effect.

Edit: I don't mean penalty, but maybe some sort of sandbox thingie? Really don't know, that's why I started this thread in the first place:cool:

I havent heard any cases of penalty becaus of your sig. Well forums like this also helps your backlinks so why bother removing your sig? :)

I have made 150 odd posts in this forum so i have 150 links to my site but google will only count this as one link if you know what i mean.

Am i right or wrong here?

Oops, I think I've found the problem.

I've just found out that, after upgrading to WP2.0, I accidentily changed the permalink structure, effectively changing all the URL's of posts :(

So, I just changed this back to the way it was, we'll see if it helps.

Tman - I have seen many of the links showing up in MSN, none in google (actually, though a link search shows me with close to 900 links in MSN, and 63 in Yahoo, I still have no links in google). However, my MSN and google returns are starting to show up and the trend is increasing daily on more and more selected keywords. I would guess (and I would hope) that if is this was a problem, I would have been spanked by now.

Only a guess, since I know next to nothing (all I've learned has been by the sage counsel of others, mostly on this board - yourself included, re: 201 php redirects).

I suppose a website can no way be penalized because of links. If it can, then tell me how could it be - I'm ready to paste thousands of links to my competitors' websites ;)

Forums meant for discussions and in duscussions it is supposed that the person who is active and deliver good speech, is superior one. Hence given more value.

It will not harm if not help.
