As the internet evolves, will domain names become obsolete?

They would have to come up with a new address system and massively mass market it to have a slight chance.

So I'd so no chance anytime as far as I can see.

i dont think so coz the system has taken of big time and its not like there will be a shortage of domains coz there are so many extensions

It can be. But if that is obsolete now it can be rather popular in few month. So everything depends..

Domain names will stay with us as we know them for quite long time I would say. I´m afraid of future of domain parking :)

Quite simply, no. They are the foundation of the internet as we know it. What exactly would they be replaced with?

Telephone numbers have been around for many years so there is no reason to say that domain names will be obselete.
House adresses and street names have been aroudn for many years the same.

Its a good question but if you look round you then you will see they are a fundamental part of the internet.

As of now, the answer would be NO but if we do manage to find a better way to address a site or a page independent of the names and alphabets, domain names may become old fashioned and obsolete!

History tells us that every system in the world becomes obsolete or severely modified at some point. I own several good domain names with websites that have been doing quite well for some time but I often think how long it is going to last and am preparing for domain name extinction. Take a look at the younger generation. They don't seem to care much about owning a particular domain name. Instead they are putting content all over the web and using some kind of service to connect them all. When these young people grow up they are probably going to want to do things differently from the older generation who now hold the reigns.

I do not agree with you, this new domain names added to the network.
That does not mean anything. That does not mean to write with the old extensions are meaningless.

    Dear Sarah,

I don't think it will happen any time soon. Even though the Latin system was fully embraced by Ancient Rome, it too died.. but it did not really die but evolved into many other things. Pax Vobiscum!

Possibly. As the world evolves they most likely will think of a new system/there not be enough domain names to go around eventually.

This is the first interesting blog I have found today! The internet is a "network" and somehow people are being connected by extensions but who's to say that there aren't other more powerful ways to connect? Every Tower of Babel has eventually been destroyed. History tells us that it will eventually fall as do all empires. The evidence is the fact that not everyone in the world speaks the same language. Why are there borders and protocols? Why should everyone use the same network run by the same people if they can somehow create their own or a better one based on a different system? Why should I speak your language when I have my own? Just because something seems incredibly powerful today does not mean it will be like that forever. What goes up must come down! When, why , who and how this is going to happen is a matter of constant chatter or twittering or TWITTER ..lol!

I was going to reply, no it won't be obsolete, at least not within the next 10 years and then I read your post. You've made some good points, and if a better system is found, I don't see why not. Interesting answer to an interesting question.

Its interesting that someone has now given a timeline of 10 years for current domain name extinction. Whoever did the movie Johnny Mnemonic gives an interesting hint about what might happen. Do you remember he was looking for someone on some kind of official network but later went to the underground? Is anyone following the progress of torrent technology for example those who wish for the P2P decentralized open domain name system to sky rocket? How many of you are using bit torrent type technology? What if it suddenly evolves into something else that makes everyone forget about DNS? Oh, is the revolution about to come? We are already twittering amongst ourselves!
The reason why some of us might be concerned is because we have old websites and blogs that depend on domain name systems. We have monetized those old things and don't want to lose our income, correct? The question is "Will something new give older things more or less advantage?" Would this be an interesting new thread?
