directory submission definitely helps your PR and your overall results / SERPS.

but before you submit, you need to have some real content published, else you may get rejected.
that very specially is valid for high ranking directories such as DMOZ.org, jayde or yahoo ( free listing ) but also for many other high PR directories.

make sure your site-HTML is validated and links work
then you may start submitting to quality directories.
if you search THIS forum for "directory lists" or similar keywords, you fid a bunch of circulating directory lists, some outdated, some have MUCH too high PR listed, some work fine.

if your site is new and has limited content, then I recommend you submit to all OLD known traditional directories and to some 100+ of the new directories MOST relevant to your site's content. take your time to REALLY submit into the most relevant category as it may add additional value for your site/page's keyword if you are linked from a category EXACTLY matching your topic.
    avoid submitting under "others" etc.

directory submission is time consuming, but well worth the effort. keep track on what directory you submitted and check if you are live after a while ( few weeks or few months ).

Myself I used manual submission for many years, and due to the extreme time it takes I only have submitted now and then to a few or few dozen directories at once. Now I prefer semi-automated submission - i.e. manual selection or verification of directory quality and categories and controlled automated fill in of all forms and data. that saves lots of time and thus lots of creative productivity gained.
since my site is multi lingual ( en, de, es, fr ) I use the Directory Submitter v3.0 and a self created updated list of additional 1000+ NON english directories for my languages. total some 3000+ verified existing and working directories in my own tool now and thus i have a CHOICE to submit always to the most relevant since i have several MAJOR sub-sections in my site. i submit each subsection in its language to at least 100+ or more best directories.

Directory submission always helps. It's a good source of fresh links, which all websites need as part of a balanced SEO meal.

One line says each & everything. Go through with directory submission but follow some rules as mentioned by one webmaster.

In terms of link building, yes. Directory submissions gives you 1 way link. Make sure you submit them manually for quality of each link.

Just make sure, as other have said, that they're quality and even better if they have a connection with the content of your site. Anything else, and I believe you'll be penalized.

A link is a link, it can't hurt, but it won't make your site explode overnight either.

Free directory links will help a little over time, but dont expect a #1 ranking overnight like the other DP member mentioned. Some paid directories are well worth the cost like botw.org, so consider submitting to those as well if you can afford to.
